Birth of the project

1965

A group of New Caledonian and American investors launch an unprecedented luxury hotel project in New Caledonia, marking the birth of the Hôtel Château Royal.

Hotel management by U.T.H

After a few months of operation, despite satisfactory occupancy rates but insufficient capacity, difficulties arose that prevented the hotel from meeting its commitments. Deemed essential for Nouméa and its development, the owners turned to Union Touristique et Hôtelière (U.T.H), specialised in hotel management, to manage their hotel. UTH was a subsidiary of the Chargeurs Réunis group, owner of the UTA airline that served Nouméa at that time.

UTH concluded that, due to growing demand and economic factors, the hotel’s capacity should be increased by 250 rooms while preserving its original facilities.

Inauguration of the new Château Royal

On 22 March 1973, a structure representing a traditional gathering place for discussion and decision-making—an iconic symbol of Melanesian culture—was constructed on the property. On 2 July 1973, a grand inauguration ceremony was held for the public opening.

Arrival of Club Méditerranée

1979

UTH and the owners of Château Royal ceased operations and leased the entire property to a subsidiary of Club Méditerranée (La société Calédonienne des Villages de Vacances). Club Med was highly appreciated by Australians and New Zealanders.

New era

2000

In 2000, Club Med considered an early termination of the lease, explaining that the hotel did not meet its clientele’s expectations. In 2001, Club Med officially announced its decision to close the Château Royal village and initiated a collective redundancy plan. One union, deeming the proposed severance packages insufficient, refused to participate in negotiations, although accepted by some staff, and occupied the hotel site starting from December 2001.

New era

Many New Caledonians look back on this symbolic era of mass tourism with nostalgia. In September 2002, a termination agreement between the hotel owners and Club Med was reached. It was late December of the same year, after several months of discussions between occupants and owners, that the site would be vacated.

First projet

In 2003, the hotel owners envisioned a project resulting in a management contract with the Intercontinental Group. The plan aimed to replace the existing structure with a 370-room, 5-star complex featuring a thalassotherapy centre and conference rooms. Due to regulatory hurdles, the project was halted in 2005.

Main building renovation

In 2008, following the conclusions of the 2006 tourism symposium, the decision was made to renovate the largest and most recent building. The project involved transforming the 250 hotel rooms (24 m2) into 110 one and two-bedroom suites, function rooms and a wellness centre. This project was led by CNCT (Compagnie Nouvelle Calédonie Tourisme).

Hotel official opening

On 21 February 2011, the hotel officially opened under the name Royal Tera. Subsequently, the hotel was complemented by its garden-level relaxation center, L’Aqua Royal Spa, as well as dining and entertainment areas.

Château Royal Beach Resort & Spa

In March 2013, the hotel reverted to its original name and was upgraded with new facilities, including the relaxation centre, Aqua Royal Spa, and dining and entertainment spaces. The hotel celebrated its 40th anniversary.

2023

Hotel celebrates 50 years

2023

22023 marks the 50th anniversary of Château Royal. To celebrate, a private event was organised on 30 November, where guests enjoyed live dance and music performances.
An exhibition retracing the history of the hotel was also displayed in one of the function rooms.
